What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a Neurodevelopment Disorder which usually starts at young age. It is defined as persistent pattern of inattention and/or Hyperactivity-Impulsivity symptoms that interferes with functioning or development.

Many adults have lived with feelings of failure, anxiety, poor self-esteem, depression and other negative emotions for years, never understanding that there is a reason for the challenges they have faced.

The goal of diagnosis and treatment is to help you be more effective in your day-to-day life and reduce the extent to which your untreated ADHD interferes with getting things done and your happiness. Receiving an ADHD diagnosis can be life-changing for an adult who has spent years struggling. The prevalence of Adult ADHD in UK is 3 percent.

ADHD presents differently in children and adults, even though symptoms typically start in early childhood. While hyperactivity is common in childhood ADHD, adults with ADHD often struggle with impulsiveness, restlessness and frequent mood swings.

What causes ADHD?

The exact cause of ADHD is not known, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetics, environmental and neurological factors:

  • Genetics – ADHD tends to run in familes indicating a hereditary condition.
  • Brain, structure and function – Differences in the size, structure and activity of certain brain regions.
  • Environmental factors – Exposure to environmental toxins, alcohol, or tobacco during pregnancy, premature births and low birth weight.

How Is ADHD treated?

ADHD treatment often involves a combination of approaches tailored to the individual needs:

  • Medication – Stimulant medications can help manage symptoms.
  • Behavioural therapy – Techniques to help improve organisation, time management and social skills as well as to reduce disruptive behaviours.
  • Educational Support – Special education services, individual education plans (IEP) can assist children in school.
  • Psychotherapy – Counselling to address emotional and behavioural issues, improve self-esteem and develop coping strategies.
  • Lifestyle changes– Regular exercise, healthy diet, sufficient sleep and structured routines can also help.

Accurately diagnosing and treating ADHD is crucial as it improves daily functioning, academic and social outcomes and overall well-being. Proper treatment reduces the risk of co-existing conditions and enhances quality of life, making skilled psychiatric assessment essential.

Initial Assessment & History

Gather detailed medical, family history and discuss current symptoms.

Behavioural Assessment

Use rating scales and gather information

Psychlogical Testing & Evaluation

Evaluate cognitive functions and assess for co-existing conditions.

Report & Treatment Plan

Diagnose and develop a treatment plan. Our psychiatrist will discuss this with you.

GP Involvement & Referral for ADHD Assessment

A GP referral isn't required for ADHD assessment, but we strongly recommend discussing it with your GP and obtaining a referral letter. If your GP supports the referral, they are more likely to assist with any necessary tests before treatment. Since you'll need their agreement for long-term shared care, it's best to involve your GP early on.
