What is Patch Testing?

Patch testing is a way of finding allergies to chemicals (such as metals, preservatives, rubber, perfumes) coming into contact with skin during your daily activities at home, work and hobbies.

Patch testing identifies reactions that develop over 24-72 hours after contact with a substance.

Please note: Patch testing does not detect food allergy or allergy causing sneezing, asthma or hives.

How is Patch Testing Performed?

Patch testing is carried out over three appointments within one week.

During your first visit, small adhesive patches containing carefully selected allergens are applied to your back. These are secured in place with additional tape to ensure they remain in position. You will need to keep your back dry and avoid excessive sweating during this period.

After 48 hours, you will return to the clinic for removal of the patches. The skin on your back will be examined and carefully re-marked to identify the tested areas.

A further 48 hours later, a final reading is performed to assess for delayed allergic reactions. Your results will be fully explained during your consultation and our specialist will discuss the findings and provide personalised advice on managing and avoiding identified allergens.

Is Patch Testing Safe?

Yes. Patch testing is a well-established and safe diagnostic procedure. The reactions produced are controlled and monitored by experienced clinicians. Some temporary redness or itching may occur if you react to a substance.

Frequently Asked Questions?

Three visits in the same week are essential for the tests to be performed appropriately.

For example:

1st visit: on Mon am/pm  to see our specialist and then nurse to apply the patches
2nd visit: on Wed am/pm to remove patches from your back
3rd visit: on Fri am/pm to look at your back and discuss results

Bring written ingredients (photo of label) of any substance that you suspect is causing your rash or making it worse: Household: cosmetics, perfumes, deodorants, toiletries, skin treatment creams, shoes, hobby related articles;

Work: any special clothing, chemical or equipment you use at your work e.g. please bring any specific gloves or cosmetics (up to 3 items). If possible, try to find out the name and chemical nature of these products.

For household articles you can find this information on the packaging or enclosed leaflets and please bring them along. For work related articles this information can be found on ‘Material Safety Data Sheets’ and your supervisor may be able to obtain them for you.

Also bring a list of your current medications and any skin treatment creams/ointments you are using.

1. Stop any steroid creams you may be using on your back for 2 days before the visit. You can continue to use the steroid creams elsewhere.
2. Avoid applying any moisturiser to the back on the day of first visit.
3. Avoid excessive sun exposure in the week prior to the clinic visit.

1. The back has to remain dry throughout the 5-day period and no showers/baths are allowed during the whole week. You can get red, itchy and blistering reactions if strongly allergic to any chemicals tested – this cannot be predicted prior to testing.
2. Avoid exercise or excessive movements as the tape may fall off.
3. The tape may irritate the skin and may also restrict your back movements and you may need to make some adjustments at home/work.
4. Wear dark & old clothing during this week as the ink used to mark skin may stain the clothing.

Most patients are tested against a series of 50 substances which are the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis. You may also have been tested against some other allergens which were thought to be especially relevant to you. Our specialist will be happy to go through the substances in more detail at time of your consultation.
