What are Warts?

Skin warts are benign (non-cancerous) growths on the skin caused by an infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). They appear as small, rough, hard bumps and have a cauliflower-lie appearance. They can occur on various parts of the body.

They are several types of skin warts:

  • Common Warts – Typically found on the hands and fingers and generally appear as rough, raised bumps with a grainy surface.
  • Planter Warts – Found on the soles of the feet which can be painful due to pressure from walking.
  • Flat Warts – Smaller and smoother than other types and often appear on the face, thighs or arms.
  • Filiform Warts – These warts are long and thin and usually appear on the face or neck.
  • Periungual Warts – Found around or under the nails which can affect nail growth.

What causes Warts?

Warts are caused by certain strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV).

There are lots of different strains of HPV and these cause different types of warts.

HPV causes too much keratin (a hard protein) to develop in the top skin layer (epidermis). The extra keratin produces the rough, hard texture of a wart.

Risk Factors

Skin warts are contagious and are spread through direct contact with HPV, which can enter the skin through small cuts or abrasions. They can also spread through indirect contact, such as sharing personal items like towels or razors.

How are Skin Warts Treated?

Skin warts will eventually clear up on their own, but for some people, this can take several months or even years. Since skin warts are contagious, its often not ideal to wait for them to disappear naturally.

Over the counter treatments can be time-consuming, messy, painful and occasionally  ineffective.

Our specialist dermatologist have access to more effect methods and equipment to treat skin warts quickly and safely.
