What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar Disorder- Also known as manic depression, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). When you become depressed, you may feel sad or hopeless and lose interest or pleasure in most activities. When your mood shifts to mania or hypomania (less extreme than mania), you may feel euphoric, full of energy or unusually irritable. These mood swings can affect sleep, energy, activity, judgment, behavior and the ability to think clearly.

Episodes of mood swings may occur rarely or multiple times a year.

Common symptoms of bipolar include:

  • Elevated Mood – Unusually upbeat, jumpy or wired.
  • Increased Activity/Energy – Excessive energy or agitation.
  • Reduced Need for Sleep – Feeling rested after only a few hours of sleep.
  • Racing Thoughts – Rapid thinking or speaking.
  • Impulsivity – Engaging in risky behaviours, such as spending sprees, unprotected sex or reckless driving.
  • Inflated Self-Esteem – Unusually high self-confidence or grandiosity.

Depression Episode

  • Depression Mood – Feeling sad, empty, hopeless or tearful.
  • Loss of Interest – Diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities.
  • Fatigue – Decreased energy or persistent tiredness.
  • Sleep Disturbances – Insomnia or sleeping too much.

  • Difficulty Concentrating – Trouble focusing or making decisions.

What Causes Bipolar?

Bipolar disorder is caused by a combination of genetic, biological and environmental factors.

Here’s a brief overview:

Genetic Factors

  • Family History – Bipolar disorder tends to run in families. If close relative has bipolar disorder, the risk of developing the condition is higher.
  • Genetic Variations – Certain genetic variations may increase susceptibility to bipolar disorder, although no single gene has been identified as the cause.

Biological Factors

  • Brain Structure and Function – Differences in brain structure and function, particularly in areas that regulate mood and behaviour have been observed in individuals with bipolar disorder.
  • Neurotransmitter Imbalances – Imbalances in brain chemicals which are involved in mood regulation may play a role.

Environmental Factors

  • Stressful Life Events – Traumatic or stressful events, such as the death of a loved one, abuse or major life changes can trigger the onset of bipolar disorder.
  • Substance Abuse – Alcohol or drug abuse can trigger or exacerbate mood episodes.
  • Sleep Disturbances – Disrupted sleep patterns can trigger manic or depressive episodes.

How Is Bipolar Disorder Treated?

Although bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, you can manage your mood swings and other symptoms by following a treatment plan.
