Skin lesion removal

Skin lesion removal refers to the medical procedure used to remove abnormal growths, lumps or patches on the skin. Most skin growths (lesions) are harmless. These lesions can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) and may include moles, warts, cysts, skin tags and various types of skin cancer such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

The reasons for removing a skin lesion can vary:

  • Medical necessity – Removal due to potential malignancy, infection or irritation.
  • Cosmetic reason– Removal for aesthetic purposes.

What causes skin lesions?

Skin lesions are common and may be the result of an injury or damage to your skin, like sunburn. They’re sometimes a sign of underlying conditions, like infections or autoimmune diseases. The majority of skin lesions are noncancerous and harmless (benign), but they can be a sign of something more serious.

Common causes as follows:

  • Infections – Bacterial, virus, fungal or parastic infections can lead to various skin lesions.
  • Allergic reactions – Contact dermatitis or other allergic reactions can causes rashes and other lesions.
  • Autoimmune diseases – Conditions like lupus and psoriasis can result to distinctive skin lesions.
  • Cancer – Skin cancers like melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma present as lesions.
  • Genetic lesions – Some skin lesions, such as moles or birthmarks are present from birth or develop due to genetic predispositions.
  • Environmental factors – Sun exposure, chemical exposure and physical injury can cause skin changes.
  • Systemic diseases – Conditions like diabetes and liver disease can manifest with skin lesions.

How are skin lesions treated?

Treatment for skin lesions varies and the choice method depends on the type, size, location and nature of the lesion, as well as the patient’s overall health and preference.  Common methods of skin lesion removal include:

  • Excision – Surgical removal of the lesion, often followed by stitches.
  • Cryotherapy – Freezing the lesion with liquid nitrogen.
  • Laser therapy – Using focused light to remove the lesion.
  • Electrosurgery – Using electric currents to cut, burn or destroy tissue.
  • Shave removal – Shaving off the lesion with a surgical blade.
  • Topical treatments – Applying creams or medications to treat certain types of lesions such as warts.

Early detection and treatment are crucial for successful management of skin lesions especially for new or existing changing lesions. Regular skin exams by our dermatologist and self-examinations are important for early detection and treatment especially for potentially malignant conditions.
