How Hormone Tests Help?

The most common reason for doing a blood test as part of menopause care is to check the levels of hormones in the blood. Hormone blood tests are not usually needed to make a diagnosis of the perimenopause or menopause but they can be useful for some women to check the levels of hormones during treatment.

Diagnosing menopause through blood tests is not typically recommended for women over the age of 45 due to natural fluctuations in hormone levels that can occur around this age. For women aged 40-45, hormone testing may be considered if there is uncertainty about the menopausal status. Hormone tests are most useful to diagnose menopause in women under the age of 40.
Blood tests are generally used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.

Common Hormone Tests

Hormone tests are often used to help and assess hormonal changes. The key hormone tests include:

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

  • Purpose – Measures the level of FSH in the blood. High levels can indicate that the ovaries are beginning to fail, which is a sign of menopause.
  • Typical Change – Levels increase as menopause approaches.

Estradiol

  • Purpose – Measures the level of estradiol (a form of estrogen) in the blood. Lower levels can indicate reduced ovarian function.
  • Typical Change – Levels decrease as menopause approaches.

Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

  • Purpose – Measures the level of TSH to rule out thyroid dysfunction, as thyroid problems can cause symptoms similar to those of menopause.
  • Typical Change – Not directly related to menopause but important for differential diagnosis.

Total Testosterone

  • Purpose – Measures the level of testosterone, as hormonal imbalances can also affect androgen levels.
  • Typical Change – Levels may decrease, although the change is less pronounced than for estrogen.
