What is Postnatal Depression?

Postnatal depression is a type of depression and is a common condition, affecting more than 1 in every 10 women. It can also affect fathers and partners. It typically develops within the first year after giving birth and can manifest as prolonged feelings of sadness, hopelessness and lack of interest in the baby or daily activities.

Common symptoms of postnatal depression include

  • Persistent low moods,
  • Fatigue,
  • Trouble sleeping,
  • Difficulty bonding with the baby,
  • Anxiety and irritability,
  • Changes to appetite.

The condition can vary in severity, with some individuals experiencing mild symptoms and while others may have severe depression that significantly impacts their ability to care for themselves and their baby.

What Causes Postnatal Depression?

The exact causes of postnatal depression are not fully understood, but several factors are believed  to contribute to its development:

  • Hormonal Changes – After childbirth, levels of estrogen and progesterone drop rapidly, which can trigger mood swings and depressive symptoms.
  • Emotional Factors – The stress of adapting to a new baby, sleep deprivation and concerns about parenting abilities can contribute to feelings of depression.
  • Physical Changes – The physical recovery from childbirth, including pain and changes in body image, can affect mood and contribute to depression.
  • Psychological Factors – A history of depression or other mental health issues increases the risk of developing postnatal depression.
  • Social Factors – Lack of support from family and friends, relationship problems and isolation can contribute to the onset of postnatal depression.
  • Lifestyle Factors – High stress levels, financial difficulties and major life changes around childbirth can also play a role.
  • Genetic Factors – A family history of depression or other mood disorders may increase the likelihood of experiencing postnatal depression.

How is Postnatal Depression Treated?

Postnatal depression is treated using a combination of approaches tailored to individual needs:

Talking Therapies

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapies (CBT) – Helps in addressing negative thought patterns and behaviours.
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) – Focuses on improving interpersonal relationships and support systems.
  • Counselling – Providing a supportive environment to explore feelings and develop coping strategies.

Medication

  • Antidepressants – Maybe prescribed if talking therapies are not sufficient  or if symptoms are severe. The choice of medication considers breastfeeding and potential effects on the baby.

Family & Social Support

  • Engaging family and friends for practical and emotional support and addressing any relationship issues.
