What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that’s not always related to heat or exercise. Its classed as a medical condition. You may sweat so much that it soaks through your clothes. It can affect specific areas of the body such as hands, feet, underarms and face. It can be also more generalised affecting the entire body. 

Hyperhidrosis can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, leading to social, emotional and occupational difficulties. 

What causes Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis can be classfied into two main types based on its causes:

1, Primary Idiopathic Hyperhidrosis :

  • Genetic factors – often runs in families suggesting a genetic predisposition. 
  • Overactive Sweat Glands – The exact reason is not known but understanding is an overactive sympathetic nervous system, leading to excessive stimulation of sweat glands.  

2, Secondary Hyperhidrosis :

  • Medical Conditions – such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, infections, menopause and neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s.  
  • Medications – Certain drugs including antidepressants, antipsychotics and medications to treat high blood pressure. 
  • Other factors – obesity, anxiety disorders and substance abuse.
