What is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) features a pattern of unwanted thoughts or images or fears known as obsessions. These obsessions lead you to do repetitive behaviours, also called compulsions. These obsessions and compulsions get in the way of daily activities and cause a lot of distress.
Ultimately, you feel driven to do compulsive acts to ease your stress. Even if you try to ignore or get rid of bothersome thoughts or urges, they keep coming back. This leads you to act based on ritual. This is the vicious cycle of OCD.

OCD often canters around certain themes, such as being overly fearful of getting contaminated by germs. To ease contamination fears, you may wash your hands over and over again until they’re sore and chapped.

What Causes OCD?

The exact causes of Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder (OCD) are not fully understood, but several factors may contribute:

  • Genetics – OCD can run in families, suggesting a genetic component.
  • Brain Structure & Function – Differences in brain areas responsible for decision-making, emotional regulation and behaviour might play a role.
  • Neurochemical  Imbalances – Imbalances in neurotransmitters like serotonin could contribute to OCD symptoms.

How Is OCD Treated?

OCD is typically treated by a combination of therapies and medications prescribed to manage symptoms.

Our Specialist will assess each case and recommend the relevant treatments. For cases resistant to standard treatments, more intensive interventions may be necessary.
