How does Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) work?

Estrogen production decreases as you navigate through the perimenopause. The decrease in estrogen leads to menopausal symptoms. HRT can significantly alleviate menopausal symptoms and offer health benefits.

It can however carry  some risks that may be higher for certain individuals. Our specialist can provide guidance and help determine if the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks for you

Types of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?

There are two main types of HRT: estrogen therapy and combination therapy (estrogen and progesterone). Our specialist will discuss each type with you and recommend what form will work best for you based on your symptoms, medical history and preferences.

Estrogen Therapy (ET)

Estrogen therapy involves taking only estrogen. It is usually prescribed for women who have had a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) Our specialists often prescribe a low dose of estrogen to begin with and build it up. Oestrogen can be administered in the form of a tablet, a patch, gel or spray.

Combined Estrogen-Progesterone Therapy (EPT)

This form of HRT combines doses of estrogen and progesterone. This is prescribed for women who still have their uterus as you need progesterone to protect the womb against endometrial cancer. CHRT is administered in the form of combined patches, oral tablets or transdermal oestrogen along with a body identical progesterone tablet.

Methods of Administration

  • Oral Tablets – Taken daily
  • Transdermal patches – Applied to the skin and replaced weekly or bi-weekly.
  • Topical gels & sprays Applied daily to the skin, offer flexible dosing and safer to use.
  • Vaginal creams, gels, pessaries or rings – Used to treat local symptoms of vaginal dryness and discomfort without significant absorption into the blood stream
  • Implants  – Less common but can provide long-lasting hormone delivery

Benefits of HRT

  • Symptom relief – Effective in reducing symptoms of menopause
  • Bone Health – Helps prevent osteoporosis and reduces the risk of fractures.
  • Cardiovascular Health – Taken under the age of 60 HRT is useful in preventing heart disease.
  • Quality of life – Improves sleep, mood and overall well-being for many women.

HRT can be highly effective treatment for menopause symptoms and long-term health risks associated with menopause. However, it is essential to have a personal 1-1 consultation with our Specialist Doctor at Clearmed Clinic, to weigh the benefits and risks, consider individual health factors and explore all available treatment options.
