Menopause Overview

Menopause is a natural biological process marking the end of a women’s menstrual cycles and reproductive years. It is defined as occurring 12 months after a woman’s last menstrual period and typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, although it can happen earlier or later. Menopause results from the decline in the production of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone by the ovaries.

Menopause – The point of which a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months.

Postmenopause – The period after menopause lasting the rest of woman’s life. Symptoms related to the hormonal changes may continue for some time but typically decrease in intensity.

Causes & Risk Factors

Menopause is primarily caused by the natural aging process and the decline in reproductive hormones. Other factors can influence the timing and experience of menopause include:

  • Genetics – Family history can affect the age at which menopause occurs.
  • Medical conditions – Certain medical conditions and treatments, such as chemotherapy or surgery to remove the ovaries can induce early menopause.
  • Lifestyle factors – Smoking, body mass index and overall health can influence the onset and symptoms of menopause.

Management & Treatment

We acknowledge the difficulties of managing menopause concerns in primary healthcare and believe a customised approach is more effective tailored to your individual needs.
